Summer of Starbucks: Why Nobody Cared About The Price Hike At America’s Favorite Coffee Giant

The cost of living is getting higher, even the cost of drinking coffee. Over the summer the morning Starbucks run got more expensive, but nobody cared. The coffee chain announced that select drinks were getting a higher price tag by as much as 30 cents. The menus were changed to reflect the new pricing. 

Despite the price change, lines in Starbucks seemed longer than usual as record breaking temperatures scorched major cities across the country including some spots in California.

The new prices include a 10 to 20 cent increase on select sizes of brewed coffee and an increase of 10 to 30 cents on espresso and tea lattes. The announcement follows the recent premature release of new prices that left customers questioning why they were overcharged in the weeks leading up to the public announcement. Customers were outraged, but kept the drinks coming. According to CNN, the Seattle-based company has increased prices every summer since 2013.


While customers were slammed with a few cents here and there, employees benefited from the spare change. The company also announced all employees and managers will be receiving a pay raise starting early October. In a letter addressed to workers from chairman and CEO Howard Schultz, the company will begin to give employees a raised base pay of 5 percent or greater beginning October 3. The raise is dependent on chain locations and market factors.

This could be the reason behind the long lines. A few cents per drink could be a small price to pay for helping the economy or coffee lovers need a lot more to get mad at the biggest coffee chain in the country.
